Our cover story explores the importance of medicinal lithium and the enormous benefits it can bring to human mental health and well-being. Lithium is one of the most effective treatments for bipolar disorder in the world. For reasons that are still not fully understood medicinal lithium has a remarkable effect on people suffering from severe mental illnesses, stabilising bipolar mood episodes, reducing the risk of suicide and profoundly improving the lives of millions of people.
Also, we celebrate a centenary: it was exactly 100 years ago that lithium was first produced by an industrial process in Langelsheim, Germany. Today the factory is still in operation and is currently the largest lithium processing plant in Europe (part of Albemarle Corporation).
Our conversation this quarter is with ILiA’s Honorary Fellow Professor Richard Herrington from the Natural History Museum in London, UK. Prof Herrington investigates geological resources with the potential to produce lithium, including Li-clays in the USA and Turkey, Li-rich borates in Serbia and Li-micas in granites and pegmatites across Eurasia, Africa and Australia.
