The International Lithium Association (ILiA) is pleased to announce that Mineral Resources Ltd has joined the Association as a new Core Member. This brings the number of Core Members to eight who between them supply 85% of the lithium available on the market. ILiA, the not-for-profit industry body representing the global lithium industry, also has over 60 Associate Members. The Association’s members span new mining projects, chemical specialists including active battery materials, engineers, specialist service providers and recyclers. Membership is open to the entire value chain.
ILiA was formed in 2021 by leading lithium producers to support the industry during a time of unprecedented market growth. Driven by growth in electric vehicle production, demand for lithium is forecast to increase by four times in the period to 2040 according to the analyst Wood Mackenzie. Faced with rapid growth, change and attention, the lithium industry saw an urgent need for an association that could efficiently and effectively address common challenges, such as promoting a sustainable lithium value chain for the ‘lithium century’.
Mineral Resources Chief Executive, Lithium Joshua Thurlow said: “We are excited to announce our membership of the International Lithium Association. As the owner and operator of three hard rock lithium mines, we look forward to contributing our experience and expertise to strengthen its mission to be a global authority on lithium. Association members along the entire lithium value chain are making a significant contribution to the world’s efforts to decarbonise and achieve net zero.”
Anand Sheth, Founding Chairman of ILiA, said: “We are delighted to welcome Mineral Resources to the International Lithium Association. Mineral Resources is playing a critical and important role in operating and developing several lithium resources, in joint ventures with Albemarle Corporation and Ganfeng Lithium Group and independently to help meet the world’s net zero target. Lithium is a core component of the energy transition and Western Australia is an important lithium mining jurisdiction.”
The current Core Members of ILiA are Albemarle Corporation, AMG Brasil SA, Allkem Limited, Ganfeng Lithium Group, Pilbara Minerals, SQM and Tianqi Lithium Corporation.
