International Lithium Association (ILiA) joins Eurometaux to better represent and promote the interests of the global lithium industry in the European Union

The International Lithium Association (ILiA) has joined Eurometaux in a move which further develops its global network of partner-organisations through which the voice of the lithium industry can be amplified.

“This is the lithium century and it is imperative that we all work together to ensure that high quality lithium continues to be produced sustainably and responsibly”, said Anand Sheth, Founding Chairman of ILiA. “Joining important regional bodies and benefitting from their local expertise is a key part of our strategic development”, he added.

Eurometaux is the association of the European non-ferrous metals industry. Its membership includes many other commodity associations and it has a wealth of knowledge for dealing with politicians and regulations in the European Union. ILiA has joined the Chemicals Management and Sustainability working groups of Eurometaux and will be able to directly benefit from Eurometaux’s knowledge on a wide range of issues, including REACH and CLP, for the advantage of ILiA members and stakeholders.

Guy Thiran, Director General of Eurometaux, said “The collaboration of the lithium value chain to promote sustainable production, use and recycling will supply the European battery industry with the raw materials it needs to accelerate the energy transition and achieve the European Green Deal. Eurometaux is proud to support the International Lithium Association and work with them to further this objective.”

With sales of electric vehicles (EVs) growing rapidly, investment in battery gigafactories and lithium refineries has become a major issue in Europe and around the world. Demand for lithium is forecast to increase by almost 6 times in the period to 2040, according to natural resource analyst Wood Mackenzie.

ILiA holds a unique position in the international lithium value chain and since it was founded in 2021 the Association has worked closely with Eurometaux on several projects. Formalising the relationship between the two organisations is the logical next step, according to Roland Chavasse, Secretary General of ILiA.
